Riots in DR Congo after at least 30 die in shipping disaster

At least 30 people died when an overcrowded boat hit a rock and sank on the Congo River near the provincial capital of Kisangani. Young people angered by the loss of their family members and lack of adequate safety conditions, went on a rampage in the town of Isangi, rioting and setting fire to public buildings.

Travellers should be aware that deadly shipping disasters occur frequently on rivers and lakes of the Democratic Republic of the Congo due to overcrowding, poorly maintained vessels, and lack of safety equipment such as life jackets.
