Schistosomiasis Detected in Rakhine, Myanmar

A total of 59 cases of schistosomiasis have been diagnosed in Sittwe Town in Rakhine State.

Advice

Schistosomiasis is usually contracted by people through exposure to faecal contaminated water while fishing or farming. The risk of exposure for the general traveller is usually low. However, an increasing number of tourists are acquiring the disease due to the increased popularity of eco-tourism and travelling to remote destinations. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to this infection by avoiding contact with contaminated water while fishing, swimming, bathing, wading, or farming where fecal waste is discharged into water sources. Avoid consuming food or water that may have been contaminated by human fecal matter.
