Scrub Typhus Warning in Taiwan

So far this year, there have been 67 reported cases of scrub typhus, and the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control last week urged the public to take precautions against scrub typhus when doing outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and visiting bush areas. Affected counties include Taitung and Hualien County.

Advice

The risk of exposure for the general traveller depends on individual activities. This illness is transmitted by the bites of infected mite larva (an insect). During the wet season, these insects are usually found in tall grass and other vegetation. If diagnosed early, it can be successfully treated with readily available antibiotics. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to scrub typhus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mite larva (insect) bites, especially if hiking or camping in rural areas. If symptoms develop after mite bites, seek medical care at once.
