Second death due to hantavirus in Los Santos Province, Panama

So far this year, there have been 46 cases of hantavirus infection with 2 deaths in Los Santos province. Most cases of hantavirus infection reported in Panama occur in Los Santos province. While the risk factors for exposure are not reported, agricultural workers may come in contact with contaminated dust during agricultural activities.

Dust, food, and hands that are contaminated with the dried urine and excreta of infected rodents are the main source of hantaviruses. When dust is stirred up in rodent-infested places, people inhale the virus and become infected. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to hantavirus infection by avoiding inhaling contaminated dust in infested areas whenever possible.
