Security alert for Mali

The U.S. Embassy in Bamako, Mali, has issued a warning to U.S. citizens of an ongoing threat of terrorist attacks against large gatherings, including music festivals. The Festival au Désert in Timbuktu was recently cancelled due to security concerns. Music festivals in unsecured locations outside of Bamako are vulnerable to terrorist attack, for example, the Festival sur le Niger in Segou.

On January 18, 2017, over 50 people were killed when an improvised explosive device in a vehicle detonated inside a military camp in Gao, northern Mali. Malian armed forces and UN contractors were killed.
