Security caution for Mexico

Four youths who disappeared in Mexico on October 13, while visiting their father in El Control, were found dead. Witnesses stated that the young people were last seen in the custody of a police force, known as the Hercules squad. This follows the September 26 disappearance in the Guerrero state of 43 young people enrolled in a rural teachers’ college.

Due to the disappearance of the 43 students, ongoing protests are occurring in various cities around Mexico. Sitata reminds travellers to minimize safety risk by avoiding public and political gatherings and demonstrations.

The U.S. Department of State issued a travel warning in August stating that U.S. citizens have been the target of violent crimes, such as kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery in specific areas of Mexico.

Travellers are advised to keep a low profile, be aware of your surroundings and be vigilant as to personal security.
