Security heightened for G8 meeting in Northern Ireland June 17-18, 2013

In central London today, while about 150 people marched in a “Carnival Against Capitalism” protest, riot police surrounded the building occupied by anti-G8 protesters, leading to minor altercations with police.

Travellers to Northern Ireland should be aware that the G8 meeting is due to be held at the Lough Erne golf resort in Co Fermanagh for June 17-18, 2013. Security has been heightened with more than 3,500 officers brought in from England. Officials have estimated that there will be about 10,000 protesters in Belfast and do not expect violent demonstrations.

Travellers should always avoid demonstrations and public gatherings as these situations can turn violent without warning.
