Security warning for Tanzania leading up to October 25 elections

Tanzanian police have warned of security volatility leading up to the presidential, parliamentary and local elections scheduled for Sunday, October 25, 2015. There is a possibility of clashes between rival political parties.

Advice For Travellers

Most tourists will not be at risk since most resorts and tourist sites are not in large cities. However, those travelling in Tanzania may experience heightened security and precautions. The United Nations and some countries have alerted citizens about political tensions and possible civil unrest leading up to the election, particularly in cities on the mainland and Zanzibar. United Nations staff in Tanzania have been advised to remain in Dar es Salaam for their own safety and have been warned against travelling to other parts of the country until the polling results have been agreed upon.

With respect to personal safety, exercise caution and always be aware of your surroundings. If possible, avoid polling stations, large public gatherings or demonstrations.
