Serious cholera problem in Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Due to lack of clean water, there is a continuing major outbreak of cholera involving 257 deaths and more than 11,000 cases in Katanga Province since the beginning of this year. The outbreak has been concentrated in the main city of Lubumbashi where over 6,000 cases have been reported since May 2013. Travellers to this area can reduce the risk of exposure to cholera by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
