Serious flooding in New South Wales, Australia

Severe weather that began Monday in Sydney has caused serious flooding south of Sydney and the evacuations of hundreds of residents. Heavy rains are expected to continue on Wednesday.

Weather and flood alerts are as follows:

Severe weather warning for heavy rainfall and a flood watch for the Illawarra and South Coast districts;

Flood warnings for Hawkesbury and Nepean Rivers (NSW); Shoalhaven (NSW), South Coast (NSW), Lachlan River (NSW), and Snowy River (VIC).

Residents around the St Georges Basin and Sussex Inlet in the Shoalhaven area have been issued an evacuation order.

Advice For Travellers

Travellers should avoid the New South Wales area at this time. Do not drive, ride or walk through flood waters. It is difficult to judge the depth and force of the water. A car can be swept away in only 12 inches of water. Stay away from creeks, storms drains or other bodies of flowing water. If you are trapped by a flash flood, go to the highest possible place and dial 000 if you need to be rescued. Most rescues have been people who attempted to drive through a flooded area.
