Serious forms of dengue fever increase in Alagoas State, Brazil

So far this year, there have been 11,007 reported cases of dengue fever with 18 deaths statewide. However, the number of cases of the serious forms of dengue fever, including dengue haemorrhagic fever, have tripled compared to the same time period last year (291 cases this year versus 93 cases last year).

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
