Serious hantavirus infections in Saratov oblast, Russia

So far this year, there have been 134 cases of hantavirus infection involving the the hemorrhage and kidney damage complications of this infection. Most of the cases have occurred in the Saratov oblast. In the past month alone, there were 28 new cases.

Dust, food, and hands that are contaminated with the dried urine and excreta of infected rodents are the main source of hanta viruses. When dust is stirred up during cleaning or working in rodent-infested places, people inhale the virus and become infected. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to hantavirus infection by avoiding situations that create dust in rodent infected areas.
