Serious outbreak of pneumonic plague in Madagascar

Health authorities have declared an outbreak of pneumonic plague (lung infection, the most serious form of plague infections since the bacteria is transmitted by coughing). One person has died and 5 additional cases are hospitalized.

Travellers should be aware that pneumonic plague is highly infectious and invariably fatal if not treated within 24 hours of onset of symptoms. Travellers should avoid all contact with any persons who may have been in close contact with the infected cases.
