Serious outbreak of whooping cough alarms health officials in New Zealand

Health officials are concerned that an outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough) may become a nationwide epidemic. In Marlborough, a total of 27 cases have been recorded with a further16 still under investigation. In September 2011, Nelson had 40 cases.

Travellers should be aware of the risk of exposure to whooping cough and ensure that their childhood vaccinations are up-to-date. Travellers with small children or babies should keep thme away from persons with a cough.
