Serious tension in Côte d'Ivoire

Demobilised soldiers in the Ivory Coast have armed themselves and taken positions to control three cities, Bouake, where heavy weapons fire was heard in the streets, and Daloa and Korhogo. While specific demands have not been stated, authorities said the rebels were demanding salary increases and the payment of bonuses.

Advice For Travellers

The situation remains unstable and serious with a high potential for open armed conflict. Travellers should avoid the contested cities, or, if in these cities, seek shelter until the situation is resolved.
