Shigella outbreak in Texas is increasing

An outbreak of shigellosis in Grayson county has increased from 36 cases to 61 cases in just 13 days. The cause of the outbreak is still under investigation. The cases range from 2 to 72 years old.

Food and water that are contaminated with human waste from infected persons is a common source for the bacteria that cause dysentery (shigellosis). Travellers should always exercise caution and follow strict water and food precautions while travelling. Transmission from person to person occurs due to poor personal hygiene.
