Shigellosis cases reported in Rhode Island, USA

At least 150 cases of shigellosis have been reported in Rhode Island, and the Department of Health is alerting residents to protect themselves. Cases were reported by people who swam at Spring Lake Beach and Wallum Lake, along with more cases reported from those who swam in Burrillville, Massachusetts.

Food and water that is contaminated with humanwaste from infected persons is a common source for these bacteria. Travellersshould always exercise caution and follow strict water andfood precautions while travelling.
