Shigellosis outbreak in New York, USA

Since November 2014, there has been an outbreak of shigellosis involving 80 people in Brooklyn. The outbreak spread to Rockland County where there were 49 cases through the end of December. Now there have been 15 new cases this year.

Food and water that are contaminated with human waste from infected persons is a common source for the bacteria that cause dysentery (shigellosis). However, person to person transmission, especially among children, is also a source of this infection. Travellers should always exercise caution and follow strict water and food precautions while travelling. Transmission from person to person occurs due to poor personal hygiene.
