Shortage of anti-malaria medication in Gulu District, Uganda

There is an acute shortage of malaria drugs in the Gulu District due to a rapid increase in the number of malaria cases. At present, the District registers approximately 17,000 infected people every week. There have been 72 deaths, mostly children and expectant mothers.

Advice For Travellers

There is a high risk of malaria nationwide. The risk is compounded by lack of drugs to treat the disease. Travellers to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
