Since the beginning of the year, dengue fever declines in Colombia

Starting towards the middle of 2016, number of cases of dengue fever have been declining in Colombia. However, dengue still remains a threat in 11 districts of the country, particularly Antioquia with 27,549 people infected, Valle Del Cauca, with 25,626 people infected, and Santander, with 6,986 people infected. Among all of these people infected, health officials have not reported any deaths due to the disease in Santander.

Advice For Travellers

The absence of reports from other areas does not mean that there is no dengue fever transmission there. The risk of exposure will vary from place to place and may be high in many localities.

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
