Small outbreak of Nipah virus reported in Manikganj district, Bangladesh

Six deaths due to confirmed or suspected Nipah virus infections are being investigated in the Manikganj district. Apparently all the cases had consumed raw date-palm sap contaminated by Nipah virus carrying bats. Consumption of this beverage is common and has been implicated in other outbreaks in this country. Nipah virus infections can result in death in 40-75 percent of the cases. Consumption of this beverage should be avoided.
