Snow avalanche risk increasing in Europe

With warmer temperatures, icy crusts form on snow packed mountains. Further snowfall on this crust becomes slippery and likely to turn into an avalanche. This past weekend, 1 person was killed in an avalanche in the Taillefer range (Dauphiné Alps) while 4 people died in a snowslide in Switzerland. The number of deaths due to avalanches this year now stands at 56 in France and Switzerland. In Austria's Tyrol, 5 people have died.

Vacationing skiers should be cautious and check local conditions before venturing into backcountry skiing areas.
