So far this year, polio cases only reported in Pakistan

In 2014, there were 359 cases of polio reported worldwide. Of these, 340 (95 percent) occurred in the 3 countries where polio transmission still occurs, i.e., Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Nearly all the transmission of this virus was confined to Pakistan (305 cases or 90 percent). So far this year, there have been 7 cases, all from Pakistan.

Tragically, vaccination workers continue to be killed in Pakistan. Recently, 4 members of a vaccination team were found murdered in southwest Pakistan.

Travellers in any country that reports cases of polio can reduce their risk of exposure to polio virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
