Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brazil, registers 38,000 cases of dengue fever

The state of São Paulo is grappling with a major statewide epidemic of dengue fever. Many municipalities are affected. As an example, the municipality of Sorocaba with a population of about 700,000 people has already reported about 38,000 cases of dengue, 6.705 in just the past week.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
