Sporadic armed conflict in Russia's North Caucasus Region continues (warning)

When the drivers of 2 cars failed to respond to demands to show identification, Russian security opened fire and killed 3 possible militants in the North Caucasus province of Kabardino-Balkaria. Although the account of this violence could not be independently confirmed, travellers should be aware that tensions continue in this region as part of the legacy of an Islamist insurgency rooted in two separatist wars in Chechnya. Several countries advise their citizens to avoid travel in this area due to lack of personal security.
