Sporadic cases of Japanese encephalitis in Hong Kong

A child is suspected of becoming infected with Japanese encephalitis (JE) in Hong Kong. Previously this year, there have been 2 other reported cases. Although only sporadic cases of JE have occurred, Hong Kong and China are in the area where JE occurs. Travellers to this area can reduce their risk of exposure to Japanese encephalitis virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Vaccination against Japanese encephalitis should be considered.
