Sporadic cases of malaria transmitted in Greece

Between May and September 2011, health authorities identified 20 cases of malaria infection in agricultural area of Evrotas, Lakonia. None of the cases travelled outside Greece indicating that there is a low level of malaria transmission going on in this area.

Travellers in this area should be aware of the risk of exposure to malaria and take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Since transmission is sporadic, anti-malaria medication may not be necessary.
