Sporadic cases of severe avian flu H7N9 continue in China

Seven new cases of severe respiratory infection due to the avian flu strain H7N9 have been reported from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Zhejiang and Jiangsu. Four of the patients died.

So far this year, there have been 454 human cases of this bird flu strain nationwide. Sporadic cases have been reported from Zhejiang, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Hunan, Fujian, Anhui, Jiangxi, Xinjiang, Beijing, Shandong, Henan, Guangxi, Jilin, Guizhou and Hebei.

Exposure to live poultry that carry this virus is a common risk factor. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to this virus by avoiding live poultry markets.
