Spree of massacres in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

Last Thursday, about 100 people were killed near Beni in North Kivu province of the DRC. A United Nations official warned that there is an escalating trend of massacres in this area and that the security situation is worsening. Muslim Ugandan rebels have been blamed, however, no one knows why people are being killed or who is actually responsible.

Some countries advise citizens to avoid travel to the eastern and north-eastern regions of the DRC, including Goma, North and South Kivu Provinces and the Ituri district of Orientale Province, due to the dangerous and unstable security situation and armed conflict in these areas.
