Stampede in Shanghai leaves 36 people dead

A stampede occurred in Shanghai’s riverfront Bund area on New Year’s Eve leaving at least 36 dead and dozens injured. Authorities had already cancelled an annual light show due to the crowd numbers.

Sitata warns travellers to avoid large gatherings of people. Stampedes can occur when there is inadequate crowd control and an incident sparks panic. When caught in a large crowd, be sure to identify all exit areas and attempt to move in that direction. When there is a lull in the crowd surge, move diagonally toward the edge of the crowd, and keep arms across your chest.
