Start of Japanese encephalitis season in Taiwan

The first case this year of Japanese encephalitis has been diagnosed in Tainan City. Transmission of this virus occurs from May to October, with a peak period in June and July.

Advice For Travellers

At this time, the risk of exposure for the general traveller is low, but as the season progresses, the risk may increase significantly. Travellers to areas where this virus is being transmitted can reduce their risk of exposure to Japanese encephalitis virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Vaccination against Japanese encephalitis is recommended, especially if visiting rural rice growing areas.
