State of emergency due to migrants in two border regions of Macedonia

At least 5 people were injured when Macedonian police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd of migrants who tried to charge the police barricades at the border. Macedonia has declared a state of emergency in two border regions due to the influx of huge numbers of migrants.

Advice

The state of emergency includes Gevgeliji and northern Kumanovo. Macedonia has become a transit point for migrants trying to reach the northern Economic Union countries from Greece.

Travellers should consider avoiding these border areas. Thousands of migrants have blocked train routes at times. There have reports of chaos at the Gevgelija train stations with migrants trying to get on board trains already packed with passengers. Travellers should consider avoiding the train route going north between Gevgelija and Kumanovo.
