State of São Paulo, Brazil, struggles with dengue fever

Dengue fever transmission is widespread in the state of São Paulo, including major cities. For example, in the municipality of Sorocaba, there have been almost 23,000 cases this year with 6 deaths. In 1 week the total increased by 10,000 cases. Every day, almost 1,000 people seek medical care for this infection.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
