Strong earthquake strikes Sumatra

A powerful magnitude-6.6 earthquake struck the western Indonesian island of Sumatra near the city of Medan yesterday. At least 3 people were killed while hundreds were evacuated to shelters.

About 50 houses, along with a number of mosques, churches and hospitals, were damaged by the earthquake, and more than 250 shops and kiosks caught fire.

Travellers should be aware that essential services in this area are disrupted and travelling may prove difficult.
