Summary of dengue fever situation in the Americas

The Pan American Health Organization has summarized the dengue fever situation in the Americas according to reports received from national health authorities:

  • El Salvador: 5,644 cases
  • Panama: 390 cases, 2 deaths
  • Mexico: 25,307 cases, 10 deaths
  • Aruba: 1,573 cases, 1 death
  • Bahamas: 30 cases
  • Santa Lucia: more than 150 cases, 1 death
  • Bolivia: 26,019 cases, 36 deaths
  • Peru: 33,888 cases, 28 deaths
  • Colombia: 19,482 cases, 37 deaths
  • Paraguay: 35,027 cases, 62 deaths
  • Brazil: 715,666 cases, 3,120 deaths.

While the risk of exposure to dengue virus infection varies between and even within countries, especially in countries such as Brazil that have experienced cooler temperatures during the winter season, travellers should be aware that the more tropical areas may experience outbreaks of dengue fever. Travellers should take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites in areas prone to dengue fever outbreaks.
