Suriname: Security Increased in Paramaribo Ahead of the Trial of President on 22 January

Increased security measures have been put in place near the High Court of Justice of Suriname where the trial of President Desi Bouterse will be held on 22 January. The President is expected to challenge his conviction of 20 years imprisonment handed down against him. Security presence has been increased throughout the city as a precautionary measure and several roads have been closed. Reportedly, supporters of the National Democratic Party (NDP) across the country have gathered in Paramaribo to show their support for Bouterse.
