Suspected cholera outbreak in Neiba, Bahoruco Province, Dominican Republic

Health authorities in Neiba, Bahoruco Province, have reported at least 25 cases of a cholera-like illness in each of the last two weeks (about 50 cases total). Laboratory testing has not yet confirmed the cause of the diarrhoeal illness. Although this outbreak has not been confirmed as due to cholera, travellers should exercise caution. Travellers to this area can reduce the risk of exposure to what may be cholera by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If visiting this area and if gastrointestinal symptoms develop, e.g., vomiting and watery diarrhoea, travellers should seek medical care at once.
