Suspected outbreak of dengue fever in Najran, Saudi Arabia

After several people sought care at local hospitals for symptoms suggesting dengue fever, an emergency meeting of health authorities was held to implement mosquito control measures. Because at least some of the patients had travelled from Jeddah where dengue fever occurs, it is likely that this virus was brought to Najran. However, laboratory confirmation of the cause of the outbreak is still pending. There may be more cases of dengue that are not reported. Counting and reporting cases may be difficult due to lack of local access to health care. Many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Until laboratory results are available, travellers can reduce their risk of possible exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
