Suspected Zika virus infections found in Suriname

Two suspected cases of Zika virus have been reported in Suriname. Laboratory confirmation of these infections is underway. If confirmed, this is the first report of Zika virus in this country.

Since infection with this virus causes a rather mild illness similar to flu, there may be many cases in the community that do not seek medical attention and are not reported to health authorities.
