Terrorist attack in up-scale shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya

A gun battle erupted inside the Westgate shopping centre in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. At least 30 people have died with more than 50 injured. The armed Somali group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack as retribution for Kenya's failure to withdraw its troops from Somalian border areas where this anti-government group is seeking to impose Islamic law.

Travellers should exercise a high degree of caution if travelling in Kenya. The border areas with Somalia, South Sudan and Ethiopia should be avoided.
