Thai military base in southern Thailand attacked by insurgents

Today a well-armed group of more than 100 militants attacked a Thai army base in the province of Narathiwat.

Travellers should exercise caution when travelling in southern Thailand, especially if travelling by land, and secondary roads should be avoided. Some governments recommend exercising a high degree of caution when travelling in Thailand overall. Due to an insurgency in the far south of Thailand, there is a lack of personal security. In the particular area near the border with Malaysia, over 5400 people have been killed since 2004 due to the civil unrest. Some governments warn against all travel in the provinces of Narathiwat, Songkhla, Pattani, and Yala due to the threat of terrorist attack and lack of personal safety. Check your particular government's recommendations for travel in this country.
