Tick borne encephalitis deaths in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia

Since the beginning of the season, 5 people have died from tick borne encephalitis in the Sverdlovsk Oblast. None of these people were vaccinated against this infection. So far, a total of 121 cases have been confirmed, including nine children under the age of 17 years. Travellers in countries where TBE occurs should avoid tick habitats such as woods, fields and forests where possible. Daily tick checks and prompt removal of an attached tick will help to reduce the risk of infection. Vaccination (only available in Europe) may be considered, especially if itineraries involve extensive hiking and camping in tick habitats.
