Tick Borne encephalitis in Pskov region, Russia

So far in 2012, 17 cases of tick borne encephalitis (TBE) have been reported in the Pskov region where tick bites are very common. Studies of local ticks have shown that between 4 and 6 percent of the captured ticks are infected with TBE virus. Travellers in countries where TBE occurs should avoid tick habitats such as woods, fields and forests where possible. Daily tick checks and prompt removal of an attached tick will help to reduce the risk of infection.
