Transmission of chikungunya virus continues in Eastern Visayas, Philippines (update)

The Eastern Visayas Region continues to report significant numbers of chikungunya fever cases. Villareal has recorded 499 cases since the outbreak began in November 2012, while Samar has reported 292 cases and San Juan, 17 cases. Travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever may not seek medical care and may not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
