Tsunami warning issued for coastal areas of British Columbia and Alaska

A magnitude-7.7 earthquake has struck off the coast of western Canada, centered about 155 kilometers south of Masset, British Columbia. A tsunami warning has been issued for the coastal areas ranging from Vancouver Island, British Columbia to Cape Decision, Alaska.

Anyone in low-lying areas or near beach areas should immediately go to higher ground inland and away from all coastal water areas,, including sheltered inlets or harbours. Those who feel the earthquake may only have a few minutes before the arrival of a tsunami. Structures in the beach and low-lying areas may not be designed to withstand the impast of a tsunami.
