Tsunami warning issued for Pacific coast of Japan

The Japan Meterological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coast of Japan at 03:00 am local time Friday, warning of non-damaging waves as high as one meter (3 feet). Tsunami waves were expected to arrive in Japan as early as 5 a.m. Friday local time starting on the northernmost major island, Hokkaido.

Local authorities ordered evacuations for some low-lying coastal areas in Aomori, Iwate, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Shizuoka, Tokushima and Aichi prefectures.
