Two deaths in Puerto Rico suspected to be caused by Dengue fever virus

Since the beginning of 2012, health authorities have reported 2,790 case of dengue fever, 744 of whom have been confirmed by laboratory testing. There have been 12 cases of the serious complications of dengue fever called dengue haemorrhagic fever. Two deaths are suspected to be due to dengue.

Travellers to Puerto Rico can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and may not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
