Two earthquakes within 11 minutes struck in northwest Iran killing 250 and injuring 2,000

Two large earthquakes followed by dozens of aftershocks struck within 11 minutes of each other in northwest Iran. Hospitals are trying to cope with large numbers of injured people. The most affected villages and towns included Ahar, Varzaghan and Harees, near the major city of Tabriz. Many homes were destroyed and many people are left homeless.

Travellers should avoid travelling in this area since essential services, including transportation, may be severely disrupted while emergency responses are underway.
