Two more children die of encephalitis in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India

With the deaths of 2 more children in eastern Uttar Pradesh, the total number of deaths has reached 643 this year.

The elevated number of cases and deaths in this region due to encephalitis (brain inflammation) is probably due to a combination of Japanese encephalitis virus that is transmitted by infected mosquitoes and enteroviruses that are transmitted by contaminated food and water. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites and to avoid consuming contaminated food and water.
