Two more Pacific Islands report dengue outbreaks

Health officials in Yap and Palau Islands have reported new outbreaks of dengue fever. In Yap, there have been 137 suspected cases with 34 hospitalizations. In Palau, there are several hundred suspected cases, with 3 seriously ill cases. No deaths have been reported. Since many persons infected with the dengue virus do not seek medical care and are not reported to medical authorities, the actual number of cases in the community may be much larger.

Travellers to these areas should be aware of the risk of exposure to dengue fever virus and take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
